An ER visit…

Filed in Family

So we got to visit the ER tonight.  Avery and Mason were taking a shower with Dustin downstairs and Avery stuck her finger in the floor drain.  Dustin went and got a screw driver and got the drain cover off.  He tried to use soap to lube up her finger but it wouldn’t budge.  He hollered upstairs for me to come down.  I ran down there and he was getting Avery out of the shower with the drain cover on her finger.  I was holding her in a towel trying to keep her warm and calm (which was hard because I was freaking out).  Dustin ran out and got a pair of side cuts and tried to cut it but it wouldn’t budge.  He then tried to put tape around her finger to compress the swelling and slide it off that way.  It just wasn’t happening.  So, after a little deliberation, we decided the ER was the way to go.  I frantically called Amy to see if she could come over to watch Mason.  She wasn’t home but heard the panic in my voice and called Audra to come over.  Audra met us at the door as we were putting pants on Avery and wrapping her in a blanket.  When we got to the ER, everyone was so surprised at how good she was being.  She never cried or anything during check in.  If someone asked what happened, she’d pull out her hand and say “I stuck.”  It was super cute.  Anyway, when we got into an exam room, the nurse practitioner came in and suggested an ice bath.  They brought in the bucket of ice water and Avery had a total fit when we forced her hand into it.  She fought and cried the entire time.  It felt like an hour but was really only 10 minutes.  When the NP came back in, he tried to move the drain cover and it wouldn’t budge.  He decided it did need cut off.  So, he went and got bolt cutters.  No luck.  They wouldn’t even cut through the metal.  He then tried trauma shears.  Dustin and I both knew that wouldn’t work and it didn’t.  Then the NP said he’d have to page maintenance to see what they had.  About 10 minutes later, we hear the page telling our NP that maintenance was on hold for him.  A few minutes later, the NP comes in with a nurse and the maintenance guy was standing in the doorway.  They had a set of bypass shears.  Sure enough, they slowly cut through the drain cover and eventually they got her finger free.  Avery did pretty good while they were messing with it.  She fought awfully hard but Dustin was able to hold her down and I was able to keep her from having a complete meltdown.  When it was all done, she told the NP thank you and then bye bye.  She was ready to go!  But, the NP wanted an x ray of her finger to be sure it wasn’t broke or fractured.  So, she went to get an x ray and came back with some stickers.  She was fine.  We got to come home.  I told Dustin that I hope shower drain covers are cheap because we just spent a lot to have one cut off of our daughter’s finger!  I guess Dustin will be heading to Lowe’s tomorrow.  I told him to find one with smaller holes.

Proof that she is fine.  Her finger is still swollen and red but it’s okay.  She’s such a sweetheart and was such a trooper.  I’m just so thankful that it was a minor thing that sent us to the ER in the first place.

What an eventful evening! It seems awfully funny now, although I know it wasn’t when it happened. I’m glad she’s ok and that she’ll be able to laugh about this when she gets older.
